Websites are NOT the answer to growing your business.

Let’s take a look at why having a website isn’t the sole answer to winning in the business world…these simple two stats you are about to read will illuminate the problem.

In 1993 there were only 130 websites.*  Clearly, your website could have looked like trash and it would rank high in the search engines because there was little to no competition.

This is changed in a way that I don’t think anyone could have predicted…most recent stats show that there are now 162 MILLION websites.*  Clearly no matter what industry you find yourself, having a website is a must but there are so many other websites you are competing with, it’s harder to rank and that is only going to get tougher, not easier, as time passes.

One of the biggest ideals I feel non-tech heads have regarding websites:

***It’s the website designer’s fault that a website isn’t getting traffic.***

THIS IS INSANE.
Let me share why this is the worst thought process any website owner can have….

Let’s say I was opening up a coffee shop.

I contact a commercial builder, I lay out all the plans to make the building function great for my employees, while being comfortable for all my clients and the builder does everything to my specs.

I provide great coffee and deli specials, with great prices, a great staff who really cares for its patrons in a clean comfortable environment.

Basically, I’m set for business.

However, for some odd reason, I don’t have clients walking through the door.

Because I’m not going to take responsibility for gaining the clients I want, I go back and pin the business failure on the commercial builder….NUTS RIGHT?

When I forgot to tell you that I failed to even put a sign on the building, I never advertised, I just hoped and prayed people would come through the doors just because the new building was there.

It’s clear in this scenario that web designers are much like commercial builders.

It’s NOT their job to drive traffic.  That’s on the owner or a 3rd party vendor hired to do those things.

Having a website is step ONE, it’s related to having your commercial builder create a building that is perfect for your business…it’s not his job to fill your business with customers.

Step TWO is marketing your website, just as you would if you owned a brick and mortar business.

Simply put, you have to spend time and/or money advertising your website or you can’t expect it to do anything but be an electronic paperweight.

The business philosophies of websites and a brick and mortar business don’t vary much at all.

To run a successful business, getting clients in the door, making your cash register ring here is what you are looking for:

-People to be writing about your company
-People to be talking about your company
-Reach T.O.M.A. (top of the mind awareness)

There are many tips, tricks, and marketing strategies to make this happen both online and offline…but attention, time and money have to be put into driving traffic to your website or you will be frustrated with the results for sure.
